Website Update: New Article Type: Lived Experience

Over the course of 2023, the SAJP will be trialling a section in the journal on “lived experience”. Lived experience accounts are stories written by people who have first-hand experience of mental illness. These stories help scientists, clinicians, and students better understand the real-life context of a person’s illness and how someone’s life has changed. Lived experiences are unique to the individual and help us better understand how varied the experience of illness can be in terms of struggle, hope, and recovery. A better understanding of the impact of mental illness helps humanize the condition, foster empathy and compassion, reduce stigma, and generate hope. First-person accounts also increase our appreciation as a society of the human condition affected by mental illness. SAJP welcomes contributions.
